Amanda Nguyen Guest Speaker

Cultivating a Culture of Respect with Amanda Nguyen

Amanda Nguyen is an astronaut and activist that has made history as the first Vietnamese and Southeast Asian woman in space. In 2014, after experiencing sexual harm as an undergraduate student, Nguyen founded her non-profit organization, RISE. She witnessed firsthand the impact of systems on survivors and decided to act by creating the Survivor Bill of Rights.

This groundbreaking legislation, which safeguards the rights of survivors in the United States, was passed unanimously by Congress in 2016. In 2022, Amanda brought her vision to the United Nations, where it also received unanimous approval. Nguyen will share her inspiring journey of resilience and legislative advocacy that is documented in her memoir Saving Five: A Memoir of Hope.

About the Moderator

Dr. Frazier is a Lead Research Scientist at Emory College in the Center for Contemplative Sciences and Compassion-Based Ethics, where she works with the SEE Learning Program. A medical anthropologist and public health scientist, she earned her MPH in Epidemiology and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Anthropology from Emory University. Through her research, Dr. Frazier seeks to understand how evidence-based approaches can create meaningful, positive change in the lives of others. At the heart of her work is a simple yet powerful goal: to leave the world just a little better than she found it. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Tyralynn Frazier.
