On-Going Support

The Office of Respect is a confidential support resource that helps Emory students impacted by interpersonal violence. We have advocates available to offer support and help you learn more about your options and rights; assist with safety planning; provide legal and medical coordination of care and academic advocacy coordination.

Services Offered

For anyone who feels they may benefit from talking with a counselor/advocate, please reach out to us for a consultation.

  • Advocacy & accompaniment for legal, medical, academic, and Title IX needs
  • Legal: Consultation on criteria for obtaining a Temporary Protective Order (TPO). Education on the process for obtaining a TPO. Coordination of care in obtaining the order from the appropriate court jurisdiction.
  • Medical: Coordination of care around forensic exam collection appointments, connection to follow-up medical and mental health care services.
  • Academic: Physical or virtual accompaniment to appointments with Department of Title IX, Conduct, Accessibility Services, etc.
  • Specialized trauma counseling

Emory has counselor advocates who are experienced licensed therapists and experienced advocates. They both specialize in trauma therapy and work from a survivor-led perspective. Students who may require accompaniment and advocacy support often appreciate being able to engage in short-term and long-term therapy with the person who understands what their journey has been without needing to repeat their story unnecessarily. This may also be the complete opposite for others who need to compartmentalize their experiences. We are structured to accommodate whatever is in the best interest of the student.

Navigating the healing journey with a counselor specialized in sexual and relationship violence can be very helpful. We have a flexible model that allows for us to support you therapeutically during adjudicative processes short term, provide evidence-based trauma therapy (such as Brainspotting, EMDR, and Narrative therapy), on a longer-term basis, coordinate with a treatment team, etc.: whatever is clinically indicated.
